Residence Hall
Coming Street Commons at the College of Charleston is planned as a new student housing development on property owned by the College in the block bordered by Vanderhorst, St. Philip, Calhoun, and Coming streets. This website is intended to keep the campus community and the public apprised of the project’s progress. Site visitors may sign-up to receive email notifications regarding major project updates.

The development is planned to be appropriately scaled at the street level on Vanderhorst and Coming Streets with additional stories added to portions in the interior of the block. The College has approximately 3,700 existing beds which accommodate 34% of its undergraduate population. Compared to peer institutions, the College has a relatively small quantity of traditional residence hall-style beds appropriate for first-year students, who represent the majority of students in College-owned housing.

The project is planned to include 1,000 beds in mostly double-occupancy rooms with a small percentage of single rooms. Using benchmark data from student housing projects across the country, the proposal also includes an appropriate quantity and mix of common spaces dedicated to student success and to foster community uses. Ground floor spaces will also be included to engage residents and to activate the street frontages of the project.
The goal of this project is to provide an efficient, affordable, and engaging residence life experience for first-year students and to increase the overall housing capacity at the College. The project will allow more students to live on campus, thereby reducing the number of students residing in the surrounding neighborhoods. Students who live on campus have higher academic performance and retention rates.
By adding to the College’s student housing options, this project will also provide more flexibility for the university to undertake renovations of existing residence halls and to increase on-campus housing for upperclassmen.
